✨ UK & Australia: Expanding Climate and Energy Partnerships ✨

With all the negative news at the moment, we wanted to remind you of some positive progress, such as the UK and Australia’s Climate and Energy Partnership signed in October 2024 by Keir Starmer and Anthony Albanese.

📈 Did they keep up with that promise?

✅ Offshore Wind & Green Hydrogen: The partnership focuses on accelerating renewable energy deployment, with an emphasis on developing green hydrogen technology and expanding offshore wind capacity. Twelve grants have already been awarded in December. Source: Australian Government

✅ Decommissioning Agreement: In December 2024, both countries signed a deal to collaborate on offshore oil and gas decommissioning. A new working group will identify and advance decommissioning projects that align with global sustainability standards. Source: UK Government

✅ Enhanced Climate Collaboration: Australia recently joined the Global Clean Power Alliance Finance Mission, unlocking funding to accelerate renewable energy deployment in both nations.

🌍 While these initiatives mark important progress, concerns from Pacific Island nations understandably remain - the UK, Canada, and Australia are responsible for 60% of emissions of the Commonwealth while making up only 6% of the population. Leaders continue to call on the UK and Australia to take stronger steps to curb fossil fuel exports — an area where both countries will need to deliver real action to gain trust. Source: EuroNews

Keeping these nations accountable will be key as climate ambitions turn into concrete steps.
